So week 34 sees our little man as roughly the size of a cantaloupe melon. This seems, in my eyes, smaller than a pineapple (week 33 size) though!
He is about 45 inches long from head to crown and basically just building up his fat ready for the real world. They say he will know my voice as the part of his ear that sends messages to his brain (cochlea) is becoming more mature.
His movements are so strong and even though I don’t feel those somersaults anymore, his movement is so much prominent. The space is a little crammed and so its incredible to see limbs stick out as he stretches!
What has been the biggest pregnancy symptom for week 34? Obviously the heat has been a little tough and I hate to complain about it, but yes, carrying around extra weight has meant being constantly clammy but more so than ever, swollen feet. When I say swollen feet, I mean it. Like, shoes didn’t go on and I had no ankles left.
I have also noticed some other mama’s out there on Instagram that were struggling so….
What we have experienced is edema- that’s when excess fluid collects in your tissue. Its completely normal to have a certain amount of swelling during pregnancy because of the increased amount of retaining water. Also, our growing uterus puts pressure on our pelvic veins and the vena cava (the large vein on your right side of the body that carries blood from your lower limbs back to the heart). The pressure slows the return of blood from your legs, causing it to pool, which forces fluid from your veins into the tissues of your feet and ankles.
By laying on your side, especially the left side will help so it relieves the increased pressure on your veins. However, there are some other suggested tips to try:
We finished our antenatal classes in week 34. A little bit scary really. Antenatal, breastfeeding workshop and hypnobirthing all complete. We have the theory now, its just about the practical stuff. I was kind of getting through, learning, maybe it was my security blanket, but that’s it now. Its all starting to feel more real.
Antenatal was about what happens after the birth, again some more breastfeeding tips, ways to look after the new born and some hints and tips. I think you are so focused on getting through the birth that you tend to forget what happens once you get home.
Anxiety is kicking in a little bit, especially thinking about when Michael goes back to work and wondering how it will be for just the little man and I.
It was my baby shower this weekend which we went back to my home land, York for. It was so lovely being around family and my friend arranged some great games! One involved a line of nappies that looked like they had been filled already, as we had to guess the flavour of the baby food! It was superhero theme and all just perfect!
Baby showers are such a nice way to celebrate the bump and their arrival’s, no matter how big or small they maybe, its nice to see the tradition has grown over the years. Definitely some great memories to look back on. We feel very lucky.
So that’s week 34 over, I would love to hear your tips for swollen feet or hearing about your baby showers. Please leave me a comment or get in touch! xx
